The summertime is notorious for wreaking havoc on skin, from sunburns to itchy rashes and breakouts. To protect your skin and keep it calm and clear this summer, here’s a look at 3 of the most common skin care blunders we see, along with tips for bringing out your glowing best.
Mistake #1
Forgetting to reapply sunscreen!
Notice the word “reapply.” We’re assuming that you are applying sunscreen first thing every morning. That’s the most important thing you can do to maintain the health and vibrancy of your skin. The key is reapplying sunscreen when you’ve been outdoors for a while. Sunscreen is only effective for about 2 hours, and it wears off faster after sweating or swimming. Reapplying your SPF can mean the difference between protected, younger-looking skin and a sunburned, prematurely wrinkled complexion. Which do you prefer?
Mistake #2
Choosing an SPF that’s lower than 30.
Granted, a low SPF is better than no SPF. But to fully protect your skin from damaging UV rays, you need a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 30 or greater, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Mistake #3
Getting a “healthy” glow.
There’s no such thing, unless your glow comes from a bronzer. Any amount of unprotected sun exposure is damaging to your skin. If you are seeking vitamin D, simply take a supplement or eat foods rich in the vitamin, like tuna, salmon, egg yolks, and cheese. Many foods are fortified with vitamin D, including milk, orange juice, and cereals.
